Goodness Glazes! How to Glaze Kitchen Cabinets
You know you want to make some alternations to your kitchen and have decided it all comes down to cabinetry. You have selected the door style, the wood type, the overlay (stained, framed or painted) and maybe even your new hardware. But did you realize there is a variety of glazing techniques to choose from that can also improve the look of your cabinets? We know—SO many choices! To make things easier, we have broken it down for you.
Eco-Friendly Remodeling
To clarify, glaze is a semi-clear coating that is applied right on top of the kitchen cabinet. It’s simple enough to do yourself, and can dramatically enhance any architectural details, like corners and molding. The most common glaze colors are white, black, brown and pewter. Dry, wet, pen highlight, light, medium, or heavy application all describe the intensity of coverage and finish you want over the surface of the cabinet.
Wide Variety
There is a wide variety of colors to choose from, however, most homeowners go for either a dark glaze on stained cabinets or a white glaze on lighter cabinets. This is perfect for creating a subdued and rustic vibe. Dark glaze on light cabinets tends to look more dramatic (also somewhat antique) by using extra shadows to accentuate details on the surface.
The biggest perk of working with glaze? If you aren’t happy with the effect caused by the type of glaze you have used, simply wipe it away with paint thinner and start again!
