No matter what part of the country you live in, the winter months can be slow and monotonous as we eagerly await the first signs of spring. In Texas, we obviously have a shorter period of this, but if there’s one thing we have learned over the years, it’s how to fully embrace even those not-so-great seasons and still find joy. Enter the Danish concept of hygge, something we could all use more of at this moment. Hygge is a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that brings on a feeling of contentment or well-being. Basically, it’s when you intentionally embrace the colder months of the year with happiness and inject cozy elements into your home, your attire and even the way you dine. With a few tweaks to your home, you can also hygge your space.
Soften the feel of your main living spaces with plush fabrics, large area rugs, tapestries and several throw blankets. Drape them over your couch, loveseat and pile several in a basket in the living room for easy access for guests. Remove unnecessary clutter (and even décor) that can feel distracting or stressful. The goal is to simplify so the space feels calming.
Bring on the plants! Hygge lovers recommend combining a variety of ferns, indoor trees, succulents and even the addition of a vertical, indoor garden. Vertical gardens can feature a variety of plants, herbs, flowers and even aloe. Keeping indoor plants has been proven to lower blood pressure and help boost endorphins.
If you’re working with a small space, consider adding a window seat in the bedroom or under the stairs for a designated reading nook. Add a small bookshelf for soothing candles, tiny plants and your favorite books.
