How To Choose Carpeting
Carpet Construction
Loop pile carpets have fibers bent into loops. Loop pile is very durable construction, but has a lower profile. As a result, loop pile carpets have less cushioning. Some loop pile carpets, such as Berber, have shorter loops making them ideal for heavy foot traffic. Multi-level loop pile carpets have varying lengths to create textured patterns.
Cut pile carpets don’t have any loops. They have a higher profile, are often softer, and they feel more padded than loop pile carpets. Within cut pile are various styles, such as plush, saxony, and frieze. Plush cut pile carpets are the most common and have a uniform texture, height, and appearance. Saxony is a cut pile with longer fiber so footprints will definitely show, and frieze, the longest of the cut pile is better known by its beloved playful moniker, shag carpet. There is also a blend of the two types, cut and loop, which woven together creates a hybrid featuring the best of both worlds.
Synthetic Vs. Natural
As for the fibers themselves, they can be synthetic or natural. The most common and the most popular is nylon fiber. It’s durable, stain-resistant and holds up well in high traffic areas. Wool has the distinction of being one of the most comfortable, softest natural fibers. Not only soft and comfortable, but wool is also ecofriendly, stain-resistant, and durable.
Fiber types are numerous and we carry many in stock. It’s always best to feel a carpet early in your planning stages.
What Is Carpet Face Weight?
When comparing carpet and durability, people often refer to carpet face weight. Carpet face weight is the weight (in ounces) of carpet pile per square yard of carpet. The weight does not include the carpet backing. Carpet face weight can give you a way to compare and consider the amount of fiber used in one carpet vs another. In many cases, the greater the weight of fiber, the greater the durability. This isn’t always the case, though. It’s important to consider all other facets of carpet construction.
