Window Treatments: Curtains, Drapes, or Sheers?
Curtains
Curtains are a very common type of window treatment. They are often found in informal parts of the house, such as the kitchen and bedrooms. Curtains are a lighter weight than drapes and are sold in panels. There are several ways to install curtains, but they are typically hung from a curtain rod that is installed an inch above the window frame.
Drapes
Drapes are a heavier fabric than curtains that are typically lined to block light, drafts, or heat from leaking through the window. These are found in more formal areas of the house such as the living room, dining room, and master bedroom. Interior designers encourage drapes to be hung up to 8 inches above the casement of the window and 10 – 12” on either side of the window.
Sheers
Sheers are named after the sheer, lightweight fabric they are made from. These do not block out light or create privacy so they are often layered with a blind or shade. These are great in rooms that want an airy feel such as the living room.
