One clever way to give the illusion of more space is with the help of good old-fashioned mirrors and lighting. Reflective surfaces like mirrors and metallic finishes play with light, tricking the eye into thinking the space is larger than it actually is. The addition of mirrors can give dimension, the perception of more space and will help maximize light. No dark and gloomy space here!
More Light, Please!
Powder rooms and tiny half bathrooms generally aren’t well equipped when it comes to natural lighting. Most are located under the stairs or against an interior wall where windows are not an option. Instead of just sticking to standard overhead lighting, think of implementing layers! Combine ambient lighting, task, and accent lights. Use recessed lighting with wall sconces, and then add softer lighting, like candles, to warm up the space and feel cozy.
Brighten with a Backsplash
Installing a reflective surface like a tile backsplash is a great choice for a small bathroom.
Aside from being ideal for high-moisture areas, it’s incredibly durable and easy to clean. Vinyl tiles are another cost-effective option, with so many colors and textures available for bathroom floors and backsplashes.
Work with what You Have!
Floral, chintz and brightly colored wallpaper with bold patterns also work well in small spaces. Another bonus, installing wallpaper is also relatively cheap and easy to do yourself. Really make the space your own by hanging additional mirrors, artwork and framed family photos.
